The Weekly Roundup: July 6, 2018

The Weekly Roundup

The combination of the 4th of July holiday and a week packed with big new releases coming up have led to a fairly slow week for new games. That isn’t to say that there’s nothing to see this week, this week’s games include zombies, romance, a faux-SHMUP, and a puzzle game about guiding a firefly.

As always, while the new free Android games on this list might get the most attention, don’t overlook new paid games. Paid games can often provide a better value as they’re not trying to push you towards in app purchases or wasting your time with advertisements.

Dead Island: Survivors

Dead Island: Survivors is a zombie tower defense game that was previously only available on iOS. Unlike ZombiED, players aren’t limited to setting up towers and watching as the zombie hordes attack. Instead players take an active role in bashing zombies as they try to get through each of the game’s environments. There are upgradeable towers, weapons and heroes for players to collect, and a bunch of different zombies to take down. Dead Island: Survivors is free and contains in app purchases.

Ashi: Lake of Light

Like last week’s Up Left Out, Ashi is designed to be a relaxing puzzle game. Players are tasked with guiding a firefly across each of the game’s 80 stages by lighting and extinguishing candles. Ashi: Lake of Light contains in app purchases.

Void Troopers

Previously available as an early access title on Google Play, Void Troopers is a new shoot ‘em up themed clicker. The game has players recruit captains, upgrade spaceships, and rapidly tap on the screen to destroy alien fleets. It’s still a clicker, but it does have nice visuals and a different theme from most clickers out there thanks to the SHMUP theme. Void Troopers is free and contains in app purchases.

Royal Chaos

Perhaps not technically one of this week’s new releases, Royal Chaos received its much needed English patch, letting a new group of gamers understand the game. At its core, Royal Chaos is a romance RPG where players take the role of a young woman embroiled in ancient Chinese dynasty court politics. Users can customize their persona, make choices that may impact the game’s plot, and battle rivals as they try to find love. Royal Chaos is free and contains in app purchases.

The sequel to Dere .exe, DERE EVIL EXE is a 2D platformer that has players step into the shoes of Knightly as he runs and jumps across multiple pixel-art levels. Frustration is part of the fun here as the game is quick to punish players who fail to listen to instructions or are slow to react. DERE EVIL EXE is free and contains ads and an in app purchase that removes them.
