SEGA is getting in on the match-3 RPG rush with a new mobile game that has recently soft launched in select regions. SEGA Heroes features characters from Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Sonic the Hedgehog, and other SEGA franchises.
SEGA Heroes is a standard match-3 RPG where players match tiles of colored gems to unleash attacks from a hero of the corresponding gem type. Matching special tiles can increase the team’s rally meter, eventually leading to heroes dealing more damage or enabling special effects from character abilities.
In its current state, the game lets players collect 24 different heroes across five franchises. Many of SEGA’s biggest more popular characters are represented, including Sonic, Amy, Tails, and Knuckles from Sonic the Hedgehog. Hotsuma and company represent the Shinobi franchise, AiAi and other moneys are there for Super Monkey Ball, as well as characters from Golden Axe and Streets of Rage.
Heroes are upgraded by using a combination gold to level them up and collecting character shards to increase their star rating. As one might guess, that means loot boxes that give out character shards, though there are also other methods of collecting shards for certain characters.
At this time SEGA Heroes is only available in the Philippines. It is unknown when, or if, the game will be released in other regions. Past SEGA soft launches, like Super Monkey Ball: Sakura Edition and Sonic Forces (previously Sonic Forces: Speed Battle), lasted several months before their eventual global releases.
Because the game is new and SEGA’s track record of making changes to titles like Sonic Forces over time, additional content and other changes are likely before the game’s worldwide launch. Officially the SEGA Heroes is currently labeled as a “preview edition” in the game.
This is one of two SEGA games currently in their soft launch phases. The other is Golf of Fury, a Super Stickman Golf-like multiplayer golf game that is currently available in the Philippines, Sweden, Norway, and other select regions.
SEGA Heroes is free to play and contains in app purchases.
