RuneScape fans living in the Nordic nations can now play the Android version of Old School RuneScape (OSRS) without being a member as OSRS Mobile expands its soft launch.
Android users in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden can now download and play OSRS without being paying members, joining Canada in the game’s soft launch phase. The expansion also hints that the mobile version of the game is progressing smoothly, and that a global launch might come sooner rather than later. Though a release date has not been announced, OSRS Mobile is expected to have its global launch later this year.
The OSRS mobile soft launch is still exclusive to Android, but a closed beta test of an iOS version will start at the end of the month. For more information about the soft launch expansion and recent changes made to OSRS, see the game’s official website.
Old School RuneScape, or OSRS, Mobile is a portable version of the popular browser based MMORPG RuneScape. OSRS is a reborn version of RuneScape as it was in 2007, with any further changes being subject to community approval. The mobile version of the game offers the same OSRS experience as the web version, with the primary change being the addition of touchscreen controls and a few user interface changes. Players can play with friends who are using the web version of the game, or move between the mobile and web versions of the game.
RuneScape first caught the attention of gamers in 2001, offering players a free to play MMORPG experience that let them fish, mine, craft, and fight monsters as they attempted to level up their abilities and build their fortunes. The game was remade with the release of RuneScape 2 in 2004, which would eventually be turned into OSRS. It was once again remade in 2013 with the release of RuneScape 3, currently just referred to as RuneScape.
Unlike many of today’s free to play titles, RuneScape has not relied on selling gamers items and power ups. Instead the game offers players two tiers: free and membership. Free users have access to a smaller portion of the map, fewer skills, and significantly fewer quests. Members, who pay a monthly subscription fee, have access to an expanded map, more skills, items, and a lot of extra content to explore.
Old School RuneScape Mobile is free and available on Google Play.
