Late last year there were two new Harry Potter mobile games announced. The first was Harry Potter: Wizards Unite an augmented reality title from Pokemon GO and Ingress (and the upcoming Ingress Prime reboot) developer Niantic Labs. The second was Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, developed by casual game powerhouse Jam City, which would put players in the shoes of a new student at Hogwarts. While the former game is still a bit of a mystery, we now how more details on Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery.
Hogwarts Mystery will let players take the role of a new Hogwarts student in the time between Harry Potter’s birth and his enrollment in Hogwarts. Players will be able to hone their magical abilities, attend classes and participate in various Hogwarts activities including working on potions and transfiguration.
Character customization will be an integral part of Hogwarts mystery. Players will not only be able to customize their avatar’s appearance, but they will also be able to customize their wizard / witch’s skills. Of course, players will be able to join one of Hogwarts four houses as they progress through their years in Hogwarts. To top things off, players will have their own pet to join them on their Hogwarts adventure.
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery promises gamers a nice dose of storytelling. Jam City is promising both large story arcs and smaller side stories, with players’ decisions having an impact on how the story plays out. Making certain decisions will even impact how the game’s characters regard your witch or wizard.
While that might sound like a blast, it is important to remember that this will, in all likelihood, be a free to play title with in app purchases. That likely means that the experience will be limited in some way for free to play users.
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery has a scheduled release date of spring 2018 on Android and iOS. It is being developed by Jam City in association with Portkey Games. Players will be able to get another look at the game during the Harry Potter celebration at Universal Studios in Orlando from January 26-28. Check out the game’s official website for more information.
