CD Projekt, the parent company of Witcher developer CD Projekt Red, has announced the establishment of Spokko, a mobile gaming studio that will work on a new project. Though nothing has been announced so far, there are some hints as to what the project might be.
Spokko is being led by Maciej Weiss and Rafał Staszewski and will be work on an “ambitious project” according to Weiss. The new project will be based off of one of CD Projekt’s existing brands according to Adam Kiciński, the company’s president. This is again mentioned in the company’s job listings, which list working on a recognized IP as one of the job’s perks.
CD Projekt is known for one brand, The Witcher, a series of games based on the novels of Andrzej Sapkowski. Thus far the only games that CD Projekt have been The Witcher trilogy, a card game based on The Witcher, and The Witcher Adventures. It’s upcoming project, Cyberpunk 2077 will be the company’s first move away from the franchise since it begun developing games.
Based on the absence of other recognizable brands, there is a high likelihood that the new project that Spokko will be working on will be based on The Witcher IP. While some might quickly jump to the idea that the new studio will be working on a port of Witcher card game Gwent, that does not appear to be the case.
Job listings on the Spokko’s website list opportunities for 3D animation artist whose responsibilities include facial animations and a character concept artist with 3D modeling experience. Those positions are not likely related to a port of Gwent, nor would a port of a card game likely to be labeled as ambitious.
That means that a brand new 3D mobile Witcher game may be in the works from Spokko.
