After being available for a while in a variety of regions, one of the biggest games in the world has finally made its way to North America. Tencent’s Arena of Valor (also known as Strike of Kings and Kings of Glory) is a competitive multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), in the vain as games like League of Legends. Players pick their hero and take on their opponents in 5 on 5 PVP matches. As they play each match and defeat enemies they level up and acquire new items and skills. These matches are designed to last between 10 and 15 minutes, making them a bit longer than many mobile experiences.
Although not the first mobile MOBA, particularly in the West, Arena of Valor does have some things that set it apart. The game boasts a soundtrack from renowned composer Hans Zimmer, and visuals that hold their own against many PC MOBAs. Arena of Valor has also licensed characters from DC Comics including Batman, Superman, and Wonderwoman. The game also features over 40 heroes, multiple modes including 5v5, 3v3, and 1v1, as well as voice chat.
While Tencent may not be a household name outside of Asia, they are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to gaming. They own a majority stake in Clash of Clans developer Supercell and Leage of Legends developer Riot Games. They also have significant shares in companies that include Epic Games, Glu Mobile and Lineage 2 Revolution publisher Netmarble. Tencent made some headlines in the west when it was revealed that they were working on two different mobile versions of Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG).
Arena of Valor is free and contains in app purchases. Here is a trailer with more information:
